Explanation of WELS
Just what is the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod

Wisconsin
Our church body got its start in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1850, when three pastors joined together to form a synod.

Evangelical
The word evangelical means “gospel preaching.” The gospel is the good news that Jesus is the Savior of all people. That’s our message.

Lutheran
In the sixteenth century, after many years of false teaching in the church, Martin Luther rediscovered the truth of the Bible. He spent his life preaching and teaching that truth. Like him we too preach the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

Synod
A synod is a gathering of people who “walk together” in the truth of God’s Word. The Wisconsin Synod is made up of hundreds of congregations and thousands of people who share the same confession of faith, and the same desire to share that faith with the world.

What We Believe
We believe that the Bible is God’s Word, true in every part and totally relevant to our lives. We base all our teaching on the Bible.
We believe that the only true God is the triune God of the Bible: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
We believe that all people are sinners who desperately need a Savior. We believe that Jesus Christ is that Savior. He became a man, lived a perfect life and died to pay for the sins of all people. He rose to proclaim that he defeated the devil and won forgiveness and eternal life for all people. All who believe will not really die, but will live with him forever.
